WOW Wagon Volunteer

WOW Wagon Volunteers help create a welcoming, safe, and engaging experience for children and families visiting the WOW Wagon. Volunteers assist with setup, greeting guests, distributing books, tracking participation, and closing the wagon after each event.

Responsibilities

Before the Event — Arrive 30 Minutes Early

  • Prepare the wagon for visitors by straightening books and removing protective shelf slats.

  • Turn on overhead magnetic lights and check fans; add batteries as needed.

  • Ensure the wagon is clean, organized, and ready for guests.

  • Prepare the iPad and QR code scanner for tracking.

During the Event

  • Greet children, parents, and caregivers as they enter the WOW Wagon.

  • Help maintain a welcoming, clean, and organized space.

  • Keep bookshelves neat and assist children as needed.

  • Sweep or Swiffer the floor as needed.

  • Use the iPad and QR code scanner to track the number of children served and books distributed.

  • Report any safety, equipment, or other concerns to the United Way staff/event lead.

After the Event

  • Straighten books and replace protective shelf slats.

  • Collect safety cones and pool noodles from the door cables.

  • Remove fan batteries and place them in the designated tote.

  • Place the iPad, QR scanner, and magnetic lights in the designated tote.

  • Bag and dispose of trash and tidy the wagon.

  • Close and securely latch all trailer doors.

Volunteer Expectations

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Arrive on time and remain engaged throughout their scheduled shift.

  • Treat children, families, staff, and fellow volunteers with kindness and respect.

  • Follow United Way safety procedures and staff instructions.

  • Handle books, equipment, and technology with care.

  • Maintain appropriate boundaries and protect the privacy of children and families.

  • Report accidents, injuries, or safety concerns to United Way staff immediately.

  • Ask for assistance whenever they are unsure about a task or situation.

Background Check Requirement

All volunteers age 18 and older are required to complete a background check prior to volunteering on the WOW Wagon.
