The Salvation Army of Dyer County is not the organization many might imagine. There are no paid staff members, no vans, no office, and no steady budget. Instead, it is a 100 percent volunteer-run Service Unit, sustained entirely by the dedication of local people who give their time, energy, and resources to serve their neighbors in need.
The unit began decades ago as a simple soup kitchen and clothing ministry. To continue, it partnered with the Salvation Army as a Service Unit, following the organization’s guidelines and contributing a small portion to national disaster relief. Beyond that, every dollar that keeps the local unit running is raised right here in Dyer County.
What We Do
We are the only Soup Kitchen in North West Tennessee. We plan, prep, cook and serve almost 300 daily. Our Thrift store donates over 50 % of items and sells the rest. The proceeds are used to pay the utilities at our Soup Kitchen. Additionally, we provide food boxes, utility assistance, Christmas assistance, pet food assistance, and school uniform assistance.
